Rolling Stone Screwed Up

I am currently and have been a Rolling Stone subscriber for years, and years. I was a subscriber in England from their second year, I think. I've lapsed a few times between moves around Europe and across the Atlantic. But it has always been, and still is, my favorite magazine.
But every so often they come out with an issue for the top 100 this or that and they always seem to miss out a bit. I understand that the "best" of anything is often in the mind of the beholder, but this time they have overstepped the mark.

Their current issue is the 100 Greatest Guitar Player issue.
We could argue for hours of the placing within the hundred of the various artists included.
And I have no quarrel with the top two at all. I think Carlos Santana was way lower than he should be. And obviously because this is Rock guitar there is no place for the likes of Segovia or Django. But the egregious omission is Roy Buchanan. Come on Rolling Stone, you ignored one of the greatest rock / blues guitarists of all time. Listen in a bit and see what you overlooked.

Live from Austin Texas

One of the pioneers of the telecaster sound, he was noted for his use of note bending, volume swells, staccato runs and "pinch" harmonics. He is considered by many to be one of America's most soulful guitar masters, and even 20 years after his death, he maintains an army of devoted fans, including some of rock guitar's greatest (just ask Jeff Beck, Robbie Robertson or Billy Gibbons). This performance, captured on the ACL stage on November 15, 1976, shows Roy Buchanan in his prime at the age of 37. Indeed, it may well be the best high-quality audio/video recording of his complete performance known to exist.

Green Onions

From the Rockpalast at Hamburg 1985. Brilliant cover of the Booker T and the MG's classic.
At least the Germans appreciated him.

Not sure where this one took place, but hold on to your hats everyone.

OK, I think we proved our point. But just in case here is the complete performance from Austin Texas.

Probably the best high-quality video of Roy's performance, recorded live on November 15, 1976

Track list:
1. Roy's Blues
2. Soul Dressing
3. Sweet Dreams
4. Hey Joe
5. The Messiah Will Come Again

When David Fricke picked 'em he was number 57 and that was way too low!!
In 1971, a documentary about Roy Buchanan aired on public TV; it was called The Best Unknown Guitarist in the World. The title remains apt today. Buchanan's gritty blues-rock playing entranced other guitarists such as Jeff Beck. But the Washington, D.C., virtuoso never caught the break he deserved, and in 1988, at age forty-eight, he took his own life while in jail for public drunkenness.

Susanna Wallumrød

Susanna Wallumrød (born in 1979) is a Norwegian singer, composer and musician. She started the duo Susanna and the Magical Orchestra with keyboard-player Morten Qvenild in 2000, and has released five albums so far with the duo and also as Susanna.
Besides playing with Morten Qvenild, Pål Hausken, Helge Sten on a more regular basis she has also collaborated with The White Birch, Jenny Hval, the american artist Bonnie 'Prince Billy, The Cairo Gang, Ensemble neoN and Giovanna Pessi amongst others.
In March 2011 she releases a new album with music she has made to poems by the Norwegian poet Gunvor Hofmo. The band is Ståle Storløkken, Hans Magnus 'Snah' Ryan, Jo Berger Myhre and Erland Dahlen.
Susanna Wallumrød is currently touring with material from all her previous albums in solo, duo or trio constellations.

There is also a beautiful new album with Giovanna Pessi, If Grief Could Wait. This album features songs by Leonard Cohen, Henry Purcell, Nick Drake and Susanna Wallumrød originals. A true feast for the mind and the ears. However I am unable at this time to find any samples on YouTube or anywhere else for that matter. So enjoy some older gems from Susanna.

Take one of the more raucous songs from one of the more raucous bands and turn it into a beautiful ballad. Wow that is some feat! Here is Susanna's interpretation of a Thin Lizzy classic.
Jailbreak

A truly fine version of the song everybody sings.
Hallelujah

Written by Leonard Cohen. Live on the Norwegian talkshow "Store studio" (NRK), August 25, 2006. Susanna and the Magical Orchestra are: Susanna Karolina Wallumrød, vocal and keyboards, and Morten Qvenild on keyboards, both from Norway.

Sophie Zelmani

Sophie Zelmani has a new album out. That's how I started my previous post on Sophie Zelmani.
And maybe it's just the time of year, but Sophie does indeed have a new album, Soul.
And beautiful it is, some great tracks on there.

First up a couple of tracks [7 and 10] from the album, performed live on Swedish TV.

Francesca Lee

Some local talent today. I heard of her thanks to a friend, Rosemary thank you so much.
This young lady is San Francisco based, and from what I have heard so far has a really great tone, in fact a beautiful voice. Just listen to how effortlessly Francesca Lee sings these great songs.

I just love the "jazzy" feel of this song, but someone should get this young lady a bigger piano! :0)
Paper Hearts

Losing You

This video was shot in Los Angeles. Francesca Lee along with her guitarist Jeff Johnson were set to play at the Viper Room that evening. That same evening the show was cancelled and so Francesca Lee put on a free concert in the basement of West Hollywood Hostel (Banana Bungalow). The two had great performance that evening and despite the inconveniences of evening managed to still put on a great show.In this video Francesca Lee is performing the song (Losing You). This is where magic happens!

Finally they got her a bigger piano! :0)
Maybe Today

This beautiful, thought provoking song was written and performed by Francesca Lee with
Kevin Harris on Guitar Background Vocals
Shelby Grolig on Background Vocals
Gentry Bronson on Keyboard
Adam Lowdermilk on Bass
Doug Kyle on Drums

Here's a terrific performance I remember hearing on my drive to work a couple of years ago on trusty KFOG. How do artists "get up" for performing so early in the morning?
Under the Milky Way

Francesca Lee live performance on the KFOG Morning Show from Gordon Biersch Brewery in San Jose on August 21, 2009

Francesca Lee is the kind of artist who stops, takes a look around, literally breathes in the inspiration for her music. Walking the streets of San Francisco is how she goes about gathering her inspirations, she sees it all around her.
As well as her solo work, she headlines with her band the New Believers at a number of well known North California venues and is well known to the people of the area, appearing on numerous local radio broadcasts and has even played on the Born To Play Live Acoustic for the Gap.

She has a storied background, born of a Polish mother and a Korean father, her formative years were spent in California and Texas. By pounding the street promoting local music and setting up street performances she managed to scrape the funding together required to head over to Liverpool in the United Kingdom to take her place in the Liverpool Institute For Performing Arts founded by no-less than former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney.

Listen to more of her music right here.

Smith & Burrows

Even at British indie’s Noughties peak, it’s doubtful anyone was crying out for a Christmas-themed side project from the lead singer of Editors and the drummer from Razorlight. Such is the perverse timeliness at which Smith & Burrows have chosen to unveil their collaboration, The Guardian couldn’t resist titling its news story for their debut album’s announcement ‘Christmas treat or Halloween joke?’. remainder of the great review here

This will probably be the only Christmas album I will feature here, unless something dramatic comes along.
Maybe like "A Handsome Family Yule Celebration".
This is really worth listening to though.
Smith & Burrows have produced a very interesting well produced "seasonal" album.

Here's a Christmas song that is as relevant in this country as in the UK.

Signe Tollefsen

In the beginning of this year we had a piece about Signe Tollefsen and her wonderful voice.
So now Signe has a new album out, Hayes, and I thought maybe you might like to hear a few tracks. These are live versions from various concerts.

Maria Rita

Maria Rita took the MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) world by storm in 2003 with her debut album, winning all kinds of awards and crossing over abroad in light of her mammoth success. The beautiful and beautiful-sounding young lady is the daughter of one of Brazil’s most (if not the most) legendary vocalists, the late Elis Regina, and if that alone weren’t enough to make her a star in waiting, her father is César Camargo Mariano, one of the country’s top arrangers, producers, and pianists, and her namesake is Rita Lee, yet another MPB legend. Add to that a close musical partnership with Milton Nascimento, who penned “A Festa,” the opening track of her debut album, and you can see why the MPB world was eagerly awaiting her recording debut.Born September 19, 1977, in São Paulo, Rita began singing professionally at age 24. Her debut album, Maria Rita, released domestically in late 2003 and internationally in 2004, spawned two big hits, the aforementioned “A Festa” and “Cara Valente.” On the heels of the album’s blockbuster success — both critical and commercial — Rita released a similarly self-titled DVD that captures her 2004 live performance at Bourbon Street in São Paulo. Among the awards won by Rita in 2004 were Latin Grammys for Best New Artist and Best MPB Album. Rita’s second album, Segundo (2005), was even more popular than her first (selling over 700,000 copies in Brazil alone), if not as critically acclaimed. A live DVD, Segundo ao Vivo, followed in 2006. Rita’s third album, Samba Meu (2007), was a change of style: a collection of acoustic sambas. [exystence]
A nice calming salsa / samba feel for a Sunday evening.  Enjoy.

Liz Green

Liz Green’s debut album has been a long time coming. The Wirral-born, Manchester-based singer first made some big waves in 2007 after her double A-side single Bad Medicine/French Singer was released. The eerie mix of blues and jazz, sounding for all the world like they were recorded sometime in the ’30s, caused quite a splash, and it wasn’t long before Green was tipped as one to watch. Yet then, for four long years, silence pretty much reigned. But now, finally it is here. O, Devotion finally hits the stores. And well worth the wait I think.

Piney Gir

Remember back in the last year when Piney Gir used to sing Spaghetti-country-punk-gospel-pop?
Well she's re-invented herself again and entered another genre.
Singer/songwriter Piney Gir continues to develop her chameleon-like career with her fifth studio album, 'Geronimo!, a collection of songs seemingly inspired by the jukebox joints of the ’60s. With an impressive array of guest musicians on board, including members of Brian Wilson’s band and the Beatles’ regular brass section.

Brazilian Women Prisons

Incredible photo essay of a photographer Luiz Santos who made this project in order to show the situation of women in Brazil prisons and their children that live with them in prison and who are exposed to “violence, drug use and poor hygiene.”

A detainee returns to prison after a visit to a local hospital. The prison itself has a surgery but major medical proceedings take part away from the main building. Moving prisoners can be a daunting business. Attempting escapes are commonplace.

Dona Maria is a former prisoner herself and comes to the prison to visit her daughter who waits trial for shop lifting. She is the main provider for her grandson Junior, 9, and granddaughter Vitoria, 4 - a responsibility she considers too great.

Dona Maria is a former prisoner herself and comes to the prison to visit her daughter condemned for drug trafficking. She fells humiliated every time she visits her daughter as the warders strip her naked and search her vagina for drugs with the help of a torch. She also struggles to maintain her daughter's children.

Michele Damaces, 19 and Ingride. Michele was arrested with her partner both accused of trafficking crack cocaine.

Michele Damaces, 19, feeds her 9 days old baby.

The prison is open to visitors on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It is an opportunity to catch up with the world outside the walls. In the common area families meet to share not only stories, anxieties and experiences but also the physical space.

A mother waits to meet her son at a prison gate. Black poor children born in prison (or who have mothers in prison) are more likely to get involved in crime than those white, free and better off counterparts. The State in Brazil has the obligation to protect vulnerable children but rarely do so. At the end, grandmothers outside the prisons are, in fact, responsible for those left without assistance.

Rosangela, 33, and her 1 year old son Bruno. Rosangela was sent to prison for one year, eleven months and ten days convicted of international drug trafficking. Pedro was born in prison.

Pedro was born in prison. His mother Rosangela, 33, (on the left) was locked for international drug trafficking as she attempted to embark to Spain carrying cocaine. According to Brazilian law a child cannot stay in prison once completing two years of age but in many cases the detainees are abandoned by the family or are so poor that they can't afford childcare so the children have to live with them.

Inmates look after themselves (and other inmates' children) as long as internal disputes do not get on the way. Antonia Lucia, 29, is a crack cocaine addict - and my right hand on this assignment. She holds an inmates's baby.

No doubt prisons are tough places. It is also true that inmates find support and comfort amongst themselves as the State fails to assist them. Pregnant inmates are very vulnerable and cared for by other prisoners. Different from the general public's perception, the fact that some prisoners are guilty of horrible crimes, it does not mean they lack of friendship and compassion.

A prisoner has arrived one day prior my first day in the prison. On visit days she is kept locked in a small pavilion as she does not have friends or relatives in town. Some prisoners are from distant villages and relatives cannot afford to travel to the prison. Some others are simply abandoned.

Suelen Santos Medeiros, a 23 years old spent one year in prison for drug trafficking and now waits to be sentenced for storming a local hairdresser and throwing acid on her boyfriend lover's face. She ended up injuring eight people - including herself. Wilames, her partner and also a drug dealer, was arrested on the same occasion for possession of a fire arm.

During my time in the prison the inmates wrote a letter to the prison's director to complain about the conditions in the prison as well as to demand the review of cases. Those accused of minor crimes, and waiting to be sentenced, live in the same cells as sentenced murders. Workshops were closed due political struggles at managerial level and the inmates complain of boredom as they spend the day doing noting but smoking weed or planing the next escape.

These items were confiscated by the warders during a number of searches in the cells. Amongst them there are sex toys, hand made weapons and mobile phones (kept hidden away in the inmates' vagina). Inmates complain that searches are carried violently by the police special forces in fully riot gear and balaclavas.

Sister Adele moved to Brazil from Milan/Italy in 1993. She quotes from the Bible '...I was in jail and you visited me...' to justify her work with the families in the prison in Bahia/Brazil. Brazilian judges ruled, in 1999, that children over the age of two could not leave in prison with their mothers. As the inmates did not trust the State they decided to trust their children in the hands of Sister Adele. Her mission then begun.

Sister Adele administers a creche near the prison and looks after those who are too old to stay in prison or are from extremely poor backgrounds. The children receive good education and live like a family. In return they must accept Catholicism as their religion.

Dona Maria de Fatima contracted HIV while injecting cocaine - an addiction she has left behind. She has a daughter in prison and looks after Diane (pictured), one of her granddaughters. Her other daughter is a crack cocaine addict and her son works in security on a minimum wage.

Dona Maria de Fatima, 48 years old, who contracted HIV while injecting cocaine, looks after her granddaughter Diane as her daughter is currently in prison. Although very poor and sharing accommodation with drug dealers, drug addicts and thieves, Dona Maria de Fatima sends Diane to school and ballet and flute classes. She invests her energies in braking the cycle of violence, imprisonment and poverty that surrounds her and her community. She gave up her addiction to cocaine altogether.

Suelen Santos Medeiros, who was sentenced for burning her boyfriend's lover with acid, appears on a television blood thirsty program. When that happens the community where she lives stops to watch. Crime is almost the only way for them to enjoy their '15 minutes of fame'.

Dona Maria de Fatima's daughter (who did not want to reveal her name) is addicted to crack cocaine and has given birth to her seventh offspring. The only possessions the child has was given by the government as part of a program to assist extremely poor mothers who cannot afford the cost of maternity. The mothers must take part in pre-birth programs during pregnancy to receive the benefit. These programs aim to reduce levels of children (and mothers) mortality during labour. Her mother is HIV positive and her sister is currently imprisoned. Those inmates in long-term relationship have the right to have intimate encounters but only if they agree on receiving a contraceptive injection. The rooms where the encounters occur are as basic to say the least.
